Stars, Crosses, and Flowers

This is my own design, but the trifold design with the orange flower and purple backdrop was inspired by one of Luba Perchyshyn's simpler designs offered in a UGS catalogue.

The egg is divided into six crosses (four around the middle of the egg and one at the top and at the bottom) which are further divided into concentric stars.  Nearly all symbols on pysanky have two meanings -- pagan or Christian.  The larger star pattern (red and orange here) is a common motif and can represent the sun, but one can also link it to God's eternal love and presence in the world.  The inner star pattern is a typical rosette pattern that could be either a star or a flower.  The small red flowers are poppies, a national symbol of Ukraine.  Flowers represent femininity -- beauty and wisdom.

Going by Luba Petrusha's assignment of meaning to various colors (see her comprehensive website for details), with red being the joy of life and love, gold spirituality and wisdom, orange ambition, green hope, and purple faith and patience, I would describe this egg as signifying an outpouring of joy, passion, and life that is tempered by wisdom and faith.  Or something like that.
