Our Easter Tradition

Easter on my mom's side of the family has always been a treasured holiday, and the days of Lent before it, a special season for making pysanky.  The pysanky tradition has been handed down through the women in the family and I'm proud to continue the art.  Although I never met my grandmother or great-grandmother, I like to imagine them sitting at the table with me and my mother as we make pysanky each year.

My mother's family sometime in the early 1950's on the south side of Chicago.  Notice the pysanky on the table along with the traditional ham, kielbasa, horseradish, and paska bread.  The matriarch, Stella (Ksenia), is standing the upper right corner ominously wielding a cooking implement.  My grandmother, Mary, sits in the lower right hand corner.
