Cross with Pussy Willow

This is a diasporan design adapted from a pysanka featured in Ukrainian Easter Eggs and How We Make Them (Egg No. 2).

On this pysanka:
Pussy willow: anticipation of spring
St. Andrew's Cross (X): Patron saint of Ukraine
Baskets: knowledge and motherhood (diasporan)
Ram's horns/curly cues: strength, leadership, creativity
Eight-pointed star: sun symbol, God's love
Ladders: rising above small problems

Design References

Some of my posts make references to "UGS" catalogues and books. These are publications of Ukrainian Gift Shop, Inc. To date, they have compiled five books of egg designs. I try to acknowledge them or Luba Perchyshyn (whose designs predominate the books) when I use their designs.

Two additional books sold by UGS and associated with their shop are Eggs Beautiful: How to Make Ukrainian Easter Eggs by Johanna Luciow, Ann Kmit, and Loretta Luciow (1975); and Ukrainian Easter Eggs and How We Make Them by Anne Kmit, Loretta Luciow, Johanna Luciow, and Luba Perchyshyn (1979).

I am lucky to own Zenon Elyjiw's Sixty Score of Easter Eggs: A Comprehensible Album of Ukrainian Easter Eggs (1994). The artists whose eggs are featured in this compilation go unnamed, so I will just cite the book when I use designs from this source.

I also use designs and get inspiration from other pysanky artists, and I will credit them when necessary.
