Saving the World: One Egg at a Time

It is said that as long as pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) are being made somewhere in the world, the balance between good and evil is maintained. This blog is a record of my own contributions to saving the world from evil.

About Pysanky

Pysanky have also been called "batiked" eggs because they are created using a wax protection technique. The artist makes designs on the egg by writing on it with a cone full of molten wax (a kiska). The egg is dyed, usually multiple times, and written on after each dying to preserve that color. At the end of the process, the wax is melted off to reveal the designs.

Design References

Some of my posts make references to "UGS" catalogues and books. These are publications of Ukrainian Gift Shop, Inc. To date, they have compiled five books of egg designs. I try to acknowledge them or Luba Perchyshyn (whose designs predominate the books) when I use their designs.

Two additional books sold by UGS and associated with their shop are Eggs Beautiful: How to Make Ukrainian Easter Eggs by Johanna Luciow, Ann Kmit, and Loretta Luciow (1975); and Ukrainian Easter Eggs and How We Make Them by Anne Kmit, Loretta Luciow, Johanna Luciow, and Luba Perchyshyn (1979).

I am lucky to own Zenon Elyjiw's Sixty Score of Easter Eggs: A Comprehensible Album of Ukrainian Easter Eggs (1994). The artists whose eggs are featured in this compilation go unnamed, so I will just cite the book when I use designs from this source.

I also use designs and get inspiration from other pysanky artists, and I will credit them when necessary.
